SIMONE LIBRALON is an Italian violist whose work places the solo viola—and its rich, often overlooked sonic world—at the heart of his artistic vision. A member of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano since 2017, he combines performance, research, and recording to explore and expand the instrument’s expressive possibilities across centuries and artistic movements.
Between 2021 and 2024, he released four major solo albums for Brilliant Classics, Aulicus Classics, and Halidon Music. These recordings span from J. S. Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Viola BWV 1007–1012 to Britten’s Three Suites and Elegy, from Max Reger’s Three Suites Op. 131d to his own transcription of Bach’s Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue BWV 903. His most recent release, Primary Shapes for Solo Viola, features landmark 20th-century works by Stravinsky, La Monte Young, and Philip Glass, offering a compelling map of the viola’s historical and expressive evolution.
In 2024, he contributed as an author to the interdisciplinary volume "Ascoltare il Design. Una lettura critica del design attraverso la musica del XX secolo" (ADIper Editore), exploring the intersections between music, design, and listening practices.
In 2025, he released Terry Riley, In C for 35 Violas (Halidon Music), a personal interpretation of one of the most iconic works of American minimalism. Entirely recorded by Libralon, the project transforms In C into an inward-looking collective experience: thirty-five autonomous viola voices forming an immersive inner choir, where repetition, shared pulse, and individual freedom generate a constantly shifting sonic organism.
Praised by critics for his technical command, beauty of tone, and depth of expression, he has performed as a soloist live on Italy’s national broadcaster Rai Radio 3 (La stanza della musica), and appeared in festivals, concert series, and cultural institutions across Italy and abroad, with a repertoire ranging from early to contemporary music.
His performances and recordings have been featured by Il Sole 24 Ore, Corriere della Sera, Rai Radio 3 Suite, Radio Classica, MusicVoice, Musica, Radio Vaticana, RSI Rete Due, among others.
As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with the acclaimed Apollon Musagète Quartett (ARD Competition winners, 2008), violinist Domenico Nordio, pianist Alessandro Commellato, and the soloists of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. As a member of a string quartet, he won third prize at the 2016 “Kammermusikwettbewerb des Mozartvereins 1829” in Nuremberg.
Earlier in his career, he served as assistant principal viola of the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, principal viola at the Miami Music Festival, and a member of the Cherubini Orchestra under Riccardo Muti. His orchestral activity has taken him to the BBC Proms, the Salzburg Festival, and major venues across Europe, the UK, China, Japan, and the UAE, performing under leading conductors and alongside outstanding musicians.
